Fertilizer manufacturer CF Industries is injecting $41.4 million into its nitrogen fertilizer complex in Donaldsonville, LA to boost the facility’s capacity for nitric acid, according to a recent release issued by Louisiana Gov. John Del Edwards. The facility is the largest of its kind in the world.

“CF Industries is pleased to continue our long history of investing in and expanding our Donaldsonville Nitrogen Complex and creating jobs in Louisiana,” the company’s chief executive officer and president, Tony Will, said in a statement. “The capital investment we are making to enhance nitric acid production at the site will further expand Donaldsonville’s production flexibility and enable us to meet strong demand for the product, particularly from Louisiana’s strong chemicals industry.”

During the project, the concentration of industrial-grade nitric acid produced in the complex’s Nitric Acid No. 4 plant will be increased from 60% to 65%. The asset can currently produce 600,000 tn/yr. Additionally, a new air chiller, product storage and rail car and truck loading capabilities will be added.

The firm’s Donaldsonville complex also produces urea, urea ammonium nitrate (UAN), diesel exhaust fluid, and anhydrous ammonia for agricultural, industrial, and other applications.

“The CF Industries Nitrogen Complex is the world’s largest nitrogen facility and the largest employer for the west bank of Ascension Parish,” Clint Cointment, president of Ascension Parish, said in the release. “This investment in nitric acid speaks to the continued growth and success of the Donaldsonville facility in both operations and employees.”

Seven new positions will be added to the facility’s current headcount of 487 workers as a result of the investment.
