Emergency personnel were sent to a chemical plant in Katy, TX last Saturday after a fire ignited at the facility and a leak of sodium chlorite was reported, according to local fire officials.

A voluntary evacuation order was issued for residents within a half-mile of the Goynes Road plant during the response. Officials withdrew the order several hours later.

“The chemical (sodium chlorite) was leaked from an outside tower container and there is no damage to the building,” a post on the Waller County Fire Marshal’s Office and Office of Emergency Management page on Facebook stated. “Fortunately, there were no employees injured. The chemical has been contained.”

The Waller County Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the leak and fire.
