Specialty chemicals firm Evonik announced Tuesday that construction work has started on its new, €400 million (about $442 million) polyamide 12 (PA 12) complex in Marl, Germany. The project is the company’s biggest investment to date in the European country.
North Rhine Westphalia Minister President Armin Laschet and Evonik Industries Exective Board Chairman Christian Kullmann attended a recent groundbreaking event at the Marl Chemical Park, the company said in a release. Evonik employees and customers were in attendance, as well as several other political officials.
“This is the biggest single investment our company has made in Germany. We’re building this plant because we want to continue to grow with innovative specialty chemical products,” said Kullmann in a statement. “With our high-performance polymer PA 12 we can supply global strategic growth markets such as 3D printing. But also in the automotive industry, our light-weight and long-lasting plastic makes an important contribution to resource efficiency.”
When completed, the new complex will increase the site’s capacity for polyamide 12 by more than 50%, according to the German company.
Sold under the brand VESTAMID Granulate, the PA 12 produced by Evonik is used in a range of markets including automotive industry, oil and gas extraction, medicine, and athletics. VESTONSINT, a powdered form of PA 12 made by the company, is used in applications like metal coatings for consumer goods, dishwasher baskets, and automotive components. Evonik also produces polymer powders for 3D printing.
