Specialty chemicals firm Evonik is committing €25 million (about $27 million) to expand capacity for APIs and intermediates at its plants in Dossenheim and Hanau in Germany to meet growing European demand for contract API manufacturing and advanced intermediates, the company announced in a release Monday.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has amplified the focus of many pharmaceutical companies to have European-based manufacturing sites that can support the production of their live-saving drug products for reliable supply to regional healthcare markets,” Thomas Riermeier, senior vice president of the company’s Health Care business line, said in a statement. “The expansion of our Dossenheim and Hanau sites in Germany is now underway to support customers seeking a trusted European site for the clinical and commercial production of their APIs and intermediates.”

The first stage of the expansion effort is slated to reach completion by mid-2021. Evonik expects the project to be fully completed in 2024.

“In addition to increasing our production capacity for APIs and advanced intermediates within Europe, the expansion of the two multi-purpose cGMP sites in Dossenheim and Hanau will widen Evonik’s ability to support highly complex customer projects,” said Dr. Andreas Meudt, vice president of exclusive synthesis for Evonik’s Health Care business line, in the release.

Evonik’s sites have continuous processing assets that will enable the firm to work with customers on API projects like oncological, anti-viral, and other specialized drug products, as well as highly pure PEGs and mPEGs, cryogenic chemistry, and catalysis.
