Finland-based chemicals firm Kemira is planning to invest $20 million in an expansion project at its Eastover, SC plant, a press release issued Thursday by the South Carolina Department of Commerce said.
The company manufactures chemicals for a wide range of applications, including pulp and paper, water, industrial, and oil and gas. Kemira will boost the Eastover site’s capacity for sodium chlorate, which is used in the production process for chlorine dioxide, the firm said in a separate press release.
“As global consumption of bleaching chemicals continues to increase, we are excited about this investment in our sodium chlorate capacity in the Americas to ensure our ability to effectively serve our customers globally,” said Kim Poulsen, president, Pulp & Paper and Region head of Americas at Kemira, in a statement. “This investment not only supports our strategy to grow profitably in pulp and bleaching chemicals, but also overall strengthens our position as a leading chemical supplier for the pulp and paper industry.”
Work on the expansion commenced earlier this year. The new assets are slated to become operational early next year.
Solutions for pulp and paper applications account for about 60% of Kemira’s revenues, according to information on the company’s website.
