Cabot Corp. Commits $90M to Upgrade Louisiana Plant

Specialty chemicals and performance materials firm Cabot Corporation is launching an effort to improve the performance of its Ville Platte, LA carbon black plant. The company plans to invest $90 million to create a cohesive system that will capture steam from the incineration process, remove impurities, and provide electricity to the facility, Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards announced in a release Tuesday.

“Cabot has a proud history of manufacturing in Louisiana, having launched its Ville Platte operations 77 years ago to support our nation’s World War II effort,” said the governor. “Just last year, Cabot earned one of Louisiana’s Lantern Awards as at top manufacturer in our state. We’re encouraged by Cabot’s steps to continue that great legacy by enhancing its efficiency, improving its environmental performance, and modernizing its operations in Evangeline Parish.”

The company currently produces carbon black at the facility by processing steam from oil refineries into solid granular carbon. Carbon black is shipped from Ville Platte to customers across the country.

“We are proud to announce this investment in a state-of-the -art energy center for our Ville Platte facility, which will allow us to make clean power without generating any additional emissions,” said Cabot Corporation Senior Vice President Bart Kalkstein in the release. “In addition to the jobs this new energy center project will create, we’re also looking forward to the tremendous sustainability benefits this project will enable, including reductions in sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, and indirect greenhouse gas emissions.”

15 new direct jobs are expected to be created as a result of the investment. Work is slated to begin at the site in the second quarter of 2021 and reach completion by 2022.
