Kansas State University is again offering a course for professionals in the material properties sector, including engineers, technicians, maintenance and operations staff, chemists, process engineers, and sales and management personnel involved with solids processing instruments and equipment.

The course, "Material Properties Testing and Application of Results," will provide an understanding of material properties and how they can be measured, and demonstrates how the properties are used to help choose and select equipment for handling and processing of bulk solids.

This 2-day in-person short course will be held Sept. 24-25, 2024, at the Olathe Campus, 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m.

Understanding material properties is a key part of designing and operating processes for powders and bulk solid materials, and is especially important for anyone who develops or improves these materials.

This course will cover material properties and how they affect equipment and system design, as well as methods for measuring them through use of a hands-on approach. Discussion will include the importance and choice of various equipment such as mixers, conveyers, and dust collectors. Gravity flow properties will also be demonstrated with examples of how to use the information when designing hoppers and chutes.

Topics include:

  • Sampling Methods

  • Particle Size Analysis

  • Bulk solid properties

  • Dustiness / Dispersibility

  • Permeability / Fluidizability and air retention

  • Gravity flow: Shear Cell flow testing, Flow Function, Cohesive Strength

  • and more

Registration and more info on the K-State Material Properties course can be found here.
