Wood pellet manufacturer Ridgeland Pellet Company LLC revealed plans Thursday to invest $8.1 million to open a new production plant in Ridgeland, SC, the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce announced in a press release.

The firm said it will acquire an existing facility in the Jasper County community, where it will renovate the existing space, construct new structures, and add new equipment.

“Ridgeland Pellet Company LLC will manufacture biomass fuel pellets in the Ridgeland community for export to European markets pursuant to a long-term contract,” the company’s chief executive officer, Charles W. Knight, said in a statement. “We are excited about the opportunity to help grow existing industry in Jasper County, as well as nearby port infrastructure and the proximity of this project to a number of sawmills that will provide the necessary woodchips and other raw materials for our company.”

27 new jobs are expected to be created as a result of the project. Ridgeland’s new facility is scheduled to become operational this quarter, according to the chamber.
