American agribusiness The Andersons Inc. plans to acquire commodities firm Lansing Trade Group LLC in a $305 million deal that will expand its portfolio of specialty food and feed products and bolster its grain business.

On Wednesday, The Andersons announced that a merger agreement was signed to take on 67.5% Overland Park, KS-based Lansing’s equity in a cash and stock transaction.

“This acquisition creates a grain business of highly complementary assets with greater scale that significantly expands our reach in the agricultural marketplace,” Pat Bowe, president and chief executive officer of the Andersons, said in a press release. “We firmly believe the union of these core agricultural businesses will allow us to compete more successfully, provide greater value across an expanded platform, and grow more profitably.”

Following completion of the merger, Lansing would be rolled into The Andersons’ Grain Group with Bill Krueger, president and chief executive officer of Lansing, and Corey Jorgenson, president of The Andersons’ Grain Group, jointly leading operations.

“We will be able to provide Freedom pricing tools to the current Lansing producers while leveraging The Andersons’ facilities to merchandise more bushels to enhance our ability to supply our consumptive demand base,” said Krueger in a statement. “In effect, we will be developing a more robust North American supply chain.”

The transaction is expected to reach completion prior to Jan. 31, 2019.
