The US Senate confirmed Dr. Stephen Hahn to be the next commissioner of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Thursday.

Confirmed by a vote of 72-18, Hahn, 59, is a well-known radiation oncology expert and chief medical executive of The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, where he has held the position of professor of radiation oncology since 2015.

Hahn, who has no previous political experience in Washington, received significant Democratic support, making him a controversial choice to lead the FDA.

Hahn replaces former FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, who resigned earlier in 2019. Acting FDA Commissioner Ned Sharpless has served in the role since Gottlieb left.

“Having a confirmed FDA Commissioner of Dr. Hahn’s caliber will be a major boost to the already rapid pace of the President’s aggressive public health agenda,” Heath and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said in a statement. “Dr. Hahn brings an impressive set of scientific and leadership qualifications to the job, and I look forward to seeing the FDA and its people thrive under his leadership.”
