A newly-released report forecasts that Japanese provider of material handling systems Diafuku will lead sales of automated material handling equipment (AMH) by 2020, followed by Bosch Rexroth and Murata.

Mordor Intelligence’s report, “Automated Material Handling Systems Market,” estimates that the global market for AMH systems will grow by a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.72% from 2015 to 2020, rising from $21.05 billion to $44.49 billion.

The report’s authors said that and a growing focus on workplace safety and technological advancements will be the biggest drivers of the market during the forecast period. Demand for automation-based flexible manufacturing, growth of e-commerce, and large-scale applications of customized AMH systems are seen as the biggest growth opportunities in the market.

High up-front costs of equipment, lack of a skilled workforce, and trepidation about replacing manual labor are impediments to growth in the AMH market in the coming years, Mordor Intelligence said.

Of the types of equipment surveyed for the forecast, Mordor predicts robotic AMH systems will hold the lion’s share of the market, as it did in 2015 with an overall market share of 37.18%. The report’s authors posit that AS/RS and conveyor systems will also experience “record robust growth,” as customer demand rises in the manufacturing and food and beverages industry.

The largest market growth is expected to take place in the Asia-Pacific region, owing to the area’s progress in manufacturing and other industrial segments. North America and Europe will lead the market during the forecast period.
