Chocolate, confectionery, and snack foods firm Mondelez International announced Tuesday that the company will shift to sourcing 100% of cocoa used in its chocolate brands, including Milka and Cadbury Dairy Milk, through the Cocoa Life sustainability program by 2025.
The company currently gets about a quarter of the cocoa used in its chocolate brands through Cocoa Life, an initiative formed by Mondelez to help producers to increase yields, prevent deforestation, and provide assistance to cocoa growing communities.
“As demand for chocolate continues to grow, we are leading the transformation to build a thriving cocoa sector, an ingredient essential to our growth,” said Mondelez’s chief executive officer and chairman, Dirk Van de Put, in a press release announcing the plan. “This is an important milestone for the Cocoa Life program and will ensure more customers around the world can be confident that the chocolate brands they love are made the right way.”
By committing to increasing its sourcing from Cocoa Life, Mondelez will expand the number of farmers and communities the program works with in Ghana, Côte d’Ivoire, Indonesia, Dominican Republic, India, and Brazil. Cocoa Life currently has relationships with 142,000 cocoa farmers in 1400 communities.
“The expansion of Cocoa Life moves Mondelez International a step closer to improving the positive impact the company has on people and the planet,” said Van de Put. “Through Cocoa Life, we are leading the way in the fight against climate change in the cocoa sector and playing an active role in securing sustainable supplies of key raw materials.”
