Medical technology and solutions provider Medtronic recently held a groundbreaking ceremony to mark the commencement of construction on its Chengdu Innovation Center at the Singapore-Sichuan Hi-Tech Innovation Park in Sichuan, China, the Dublin, Ireland-based firm announced Tuesday.

Intended to offer area medical workers clinical training in a variety of disciplines and a new research platform, the center is slated for completion in 2020.

“We hope to support the growth and development of medical workers in China’s vast central and western regions, help them better understand, grasp, and capitalize the frontier technologies, enhance their clinical skills to benefit more patients, and move forward together toward the Healthy China goal,” Medtronic’s chief executive officer and chairman, Omar Ishrak, said in a company press release.

Medtronic’s new innovation center aims to fill gaps in training for healthcare professionals in western and central China, where far fewer resources exist compared to the country’s eastern regions, the company said.

“Leveraging Medtronic’s global-leading innovations and clinical expertise, this center will provide world-class training programs across diverse disciplines, including surgery, minimally invasive surgery, intensive care, internal medicine, and anesthetics, as well as disease areas such as cardio vascular, tumors, respiratory, nervous system gastrointestinal, and renal diseases,” Medtronic’s release stated.

The company also include simulation systems and equipment at the facility. Some 7000 workers will receive training at the facility each year.

“The China market presents one of the greatest opportunities for Medtronic,” said Chris Lee, president of Medtronic Greater China, in a statement. “We are ready and eager to continue working with partners in China to explore and solve the country’s healthcare challenges.”
