Plastics, chemicals, and refining company LyondellBasell announced plans Thursday to build a new 1.1 million tn ethylene cracker in Panjin, China under a 50/50 joint venture with Liaoning Bora Enterprise Group (Bora).
A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was recently signed by the two companies forming the JV. The cracker will produce olefins and polyolefins for use in construction and consumer products like pipe, plastic containers, and agricultural films.
“China is the largest, fastest growing market in the world for our core products,” Bob Patel, the firm’s chief executive office, said in a LyondellBasell press release. “The formation of this JV with a well-respected Chinese company allows us to increase our flexibility to produce these products closer to the customer. We see tremendous opportunity to create additional value and potentially grow further in this very important market.”
Following construction of the structure in Panjin, the company plans to install its Hostalen ACP polyethylene technology and the Spheripol and Spherizone polypropylene technologies in the site.
LyondellBasell operates three compounding facilities for polypropylene in China. Polyolefin products made at the new cracker will be marketed by the Dutch firm.
