Petrochemical and refining firm LyondellBasell held an event on Tuesday to mark the 50thanniversary of the opening of its propylene oxide (PO) and tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA) plant at the company’s Bayport Complex in Pasadena, TX.

“Today we are proud to celebrate a half century of operations, and our talented and dedicated colleagues who laid the foundation for our success,” Stephen Goff, site manager of the LyondellBasell Bayport Complex, said in a company press release. “We continue to be propelled by the support of our neighbors, our values, and the generations of employees who came before us.”

Built along the Houston Ship Channel in by the Oxirane Chemical Company in 1969, the plant was intended to meet high demand for PO during the 1970s. Pasadena was selected because it was close to feedstock and existing pipelines.

As the site became operational, the company used a new tertiary butyl alcohol peroxide process to manufacture PO. Ownership of the facility changed hands several times before LyondellBasell acquired the site in 2007 during the merger of Lyondell and Basell.

In August last year, LyondellBasell broke ground on a new, $2.4 billion PO/TBA production facility in Channelview, TX, Powder & Bulk Solids reported. The company said the 140-acre site will be the largest facility of its kind in the world and is its “most significant capital investment to date.” At the same time, plans were also revealed for a new 34-acre ethers unit for processing TBA into oxyfuels at the Bayport Complex.

“The Bayport Complex has a rich history and is pivotal to our company’s strategic growth along the Gulf Coast,” Bob Patel, chief executive officer of LyondellBasell, said in a statement. “In Texas, bigger is often better. For us, this facility marks a new chapter for LyondellBasell and demonstrates our commitment to continued growth and delivering on our commitments.”

When LyondellBasell’s new PO/TBA plant in Channelview becomes operational in 2021.
