Land O’ Lakes Inc. announced Friday that a letter of intent was signed to acquire Southern States Cooperative Inc.’s animal feed business, strengthening a relationship formed earlier this year with the Arden Hills, MN company’s WinField crop inputs and insights unit.

“This is an excellent opportunity to expand our relationship with Southern States and increase our animal feed business in the eastern U.S.,” said Land O’ Lakes chief executive officer and president Chris Policinski in a statement.

The company said the move aims to help its customers compete by providing greater access to Southern States’ products and services.

“We are looking forward to engaging with the Southern States members and customers to understand their needs,” Beth Ford, group executive vice president and chief operating officer of Land O’ Lakes Inc. said in a press release. “We plan to provide uninterrupted access to Southern States-branded products customers trust for their animals, and we will work every day to deliver the quality, innovation, and expertise they expect of us.”

Land O’ Lakes said it expects the transaction to be completed in January 2017.
