Styrenics firm INEOS Styrolution held an event on August 9 to mark the breaking of ground on its new acrylonitrile styrene acrylate (ASA) production facility in Bayport, TX, the company announced in a release. Once operational, the plant will have a capacity of 100 kt.

“I am excited to see us building the most efficient dedicated ASA plant in the world, here in Bayport. ASA is a versatile high performance styrenic resin,” said Alexander Glueck, president of Americas at INEOS Styrolution, in a statement. “Its properties make it the material of choice for numerous outdoor applications. ASA performs greatly in exterior automotive and construction applications.”

The company said it selected Bayport as the location of the new plant because of its proximity to raw materials and major customer markets, low cost of utilities. The ASA plant will be built next to an existing styrene monomer production site operated by INEOS.

INEOS said the Bayport project is part of broader expansion plan being carried out across the Americas. Under the effort, the firm also recently boosted capacity for acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) at its Altamira plant in Mexico.

The facility in Bayport is slated to come on line in 2021.
