DowDuPont Opens Agriculture R&D Site in California

Midland, MI-based DowDuPont Inc. recently opened a new research and development site for its Agriculture division in Hayward, CA that is intended to spur development of agricultural biotechnologies, new technologies, and informatics, the company announced in a press release Wednesday.
The Bay Area Innovation Center (BAIC) will house 60,000 sq ft of laboratory space, greenhouses totaling 13,000 sq ft, and 25,000 sq ft of office space, and feature a staff of over 100 scientists, according to the release.
“As part of the vibrant ecosystem of visionary companies, universities, startups, technology investors, and NGOs, the BAIC will drive collaboration among some of the brightest minds within agriculture and beyond for the benefit of our customers and consumers,” said James C. Collins Jr., chief operating officer of DowDuPont’s Agriculture division, in a statement. “This is a true reflection of our commitment to bringing ongoing innovation through new, breakthrough products as well as our work to support a digitally connected, more sustainable agriculture industry, focused on effective use of information and analytics.”
Research on areas like protein engineering, gene discovery, microbiomes. Staff at the Hayward facility are also working to develop new architecture for research informatics.
DowDuPont Agriculture, formed after Dow Chemical and DuPont’s 2016 merger, combines capabilities of DuPont Pioneer, DuPont Crop Protection and Dow AgroSciences. The division operates several other sites in California, including an integrated operations and field R&D site in Woodland, a crop protection manufacturing plant in Pittsburg, and a product characterization facility in Fresno.
