Heat transfer, centrifugal separation, and fluid handling technology firm Alfa Laval is teaming up with insect rearing and processing solutions firm Bühler Insect Technology Solutions to develop advanced modular insect plant solutions, the companies announced in a press release Tuesday.

“We are looking forward to bringing our expertise from other applications to this dynamic new market. The collaboration with Bühler allows us to combine our proven technology with a complete, integrated solution – and serve the customers better than either of us could do on our own,” the president of Alfa Laval’s Food & Water division, Nish Patel, said in a statement.

Bühler and Alfa Laval have collaborated on insect-related technology since 2018. The team up resulted in the development of tailored solutions for heat transfer, solid and lipid separation, and fluid handling for modular insect plant technology.

The companies recently signed an exclusive partner agreement to provide technology to small facilities, enabling the operations to produce insect protein for use in animal feed. Bühler and Alfa Laval will also partner on research and development activities and after-sales services.

“In Alfa Laval, we are proud to have found a partner who shares our approach and vision in this exciting new industry. We are convinced that insects will play an important role in making our food system more sustainable,” Andreas Aepli, chief executive officer of Bühler Insect Technology Solutions, said in the release.
