Dutch paints and coatings firm AkzoNobel plans to upgrade the manufacturing operations of its High Point, NC wood coatings plant and add automatic dosing unit technology for paint production at the site, an announcement said Tuesday. The company’s “multi-million-dollar” investment will also add a new raw materials warehouse, research laboratory, and technical application center to the site.

“This is a significant investment, which will further enable us to meet and exceed our customers’ expectations,” the chief executive officer of AkzoNobel, Tierry Vanlancker, said in a company press release. “The U.S. is a key market for our Wood Coatings business, and our customers trust us to deliver world-class products and services.”

The move boosts the firm’s supply capacity for wood finishes in North America and bolsters its market position in the U.S. Wood coatings produced at the High Point site are used by manufacturers of building products, furniture, flooring, and cabinetry.

“This investment in High Point will enable us to ensure the satisfaction of all our customers and partners, including our direct OEM building product customers and our Chemcraft distribution partners,” Simon Parker, managing director of the company’s Industrial Coatings business, said in a statement. “We’ll be able to provide current and future customers with even more flexibility through the delivery of small batch sizes; higher accuracy in stains and solid colors; more water-based products and a rapid response to requests.”

Work is slated to begin on the project this month and reach a conclusion by 2020. The facility currently occupies 30 acres and has a headcount of some 250 workers.
