Large and small molecule contract manufacturers Ajinomoto Althea and OmniChem recently launched a new Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO) named Ajinomoto Bio-Pharma Services that will produce small and large molecule APIs and intermediates, the firms announced Tuesday.

The new business includes two small molecule manufacturing sites in Belgium formerly operated by OmniChem’s Pharmaceutical Custom Manufacturing division and a large molecule manufacturing and aseptic fill finish services facility in San Diego, CA. Ajinomoto’s GeneDesign oligonucleotide production site in Osaka, Japan will join Ajinomoto Bio-Pharma’s network in 2019.

“As Ajinomoto Bio-Pharma Services, we are able to provide our customers with a wider range of CDMO offerings across multiple production platforms,” David Enloe, president and chief executive officer of the newly-created business, said in a company press release. “We have seen an ongoing shift in the bio-pharma space toward simplifying supply chains and consolidating CDMO networks. In response to that shift, we can now engage in deeper, trusted relationships with our customers fulfilling more of their supply chain demands.”

Ajinomoto said the name change and integration of the business takes effect immediately, with staff and ownership remaining unchanged.

“Unifying these individual Ajinomoto companies furthers our commitment to enhancing our trusted capabilities, quality services, and responsiveness to our customers’ needs,” said Patrick Stuyck, senior vice president and head of operations, Europe, at Ajinomoto Bio-Pharma, in a statement. “Together, as a fully integrated and global CDMO, we can more successfully contribute to the health of patients worldwide.”
