American agribusiness Cargill announced plans Wednesday to open a new Cargill Innovation Lab at the Research Park at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus. Once open, Cargill will use the site to work with customers on moving digital ideas into the testing phase.

Slated to open this fall, the company said the innovation lab’s relationship with the university will provide access to software engineering and data science students and graduates.

“We are on a constant search for new innovations and new talent, whose fresh thinking can help us to bring new technologies to life,” Keith Narr, vice president of Cargill’s digital labs team, said in a company press release. “With an impressive engineering and computer science program, the University of Illinois is an ideal partner to spur the growth and innovation in our digital business.”

The facility will work on projects that will update agricultural supply chains and food systems.
