Chinese biotechnology firm Qingdao Vland Biotech Group Co. Ltd (Vland) and American agribusiness Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) entered into a joint development agreement to create new animal feed enzymes and bring the products to market, Chicago-based ADM announced in a press release Thursday.

Along with the news of the agreement, ADM said it will open a new enzyme research and development laboratory in California to support the two firms’ activities. The Chinese firm will also engage in enzyme research and development efforts at its Qingdao laboratory.

“This agreement and the opening of our new enzyme lab will significantly enhance our ability to develop products for the fast-growing enzyme market,” Todd Werpy, chief technology officer of ADM, said in a statement. “This agreement will give our research and development team access to new enzyme strains to develop new, state-of-the-art feed enzymes. We’re looking forward to adding these capabilities to our already strong array of animal nutrition products and solutions.”

The firms will share enzyme producing strains to develop new feed enzymes, with both ADM and Vland commercializing the products emerging from the agreement.

Vland produces enzymes, probiotics, vaccines, and animal health-related products for end users in a range of industries from agriculture to textiles.
