European specialty cement supplier Calucem is preparing to expand its production footprint to the United States for the first time with plans for a new, $35 million manufacturing facility in New Orleans, LA, state economic development officials announced Monday.

“Calucem is taking on a new investment that will support our growth and diversification in the U.S. and ensure that we continue to offer high-value products to our global customers,” Calucem President and CEO Yuri Bouwhuis said in a release issued by Louisiana Economic Development (LED). “Our choice of Louisiana for our first all-new manufacturing project in the U.S. is due to the availability of strategic raw materials such as limestone and natural gas, access to waterways and skilled labor, and the long history of using specialty cement products in the U.S.”

Designed to occupy nine acres along the city’s Industrial Canal, the development of the plant will create 70 direct jobs. The location will focus on the production of calcium aluminate cement (CAC), which is used in a number of specialty applciations.

“This investment drives the company’s growth in innovative solutions for the construction sector and consolidates Cementos Molins as a world reference in the production of calcium aluminate cement,” said Julio Rodriguez, chief executive officer of Calucem’s partent company, Cementos Molins, in a statement.

Calucem expects the site to become operational in the third quarter of 2023.
