ACC Celebrates 25th Anniversary of Responsible Care Initiative

November 1, 2013

October 31 marked the official 25th anniversary of Responsible Care -- the chemical industry's world-class environmental, health, safety, and security performance initiative -- in the U.S.

Since 1988, Responsible Care has helped America's leading chemical companies go above and beyond government requirements and communicate their EHS&S performance to the public. More than a set of principles and declarations, Responsible Care implements world-class management systems, verified through independent auditors, tracks and publicly reports performance through established EHS&S measures, and extends these best practices to business partners through the industry supply chain.

This year has been a year of advancement for Responsible Care, as ACC members begin to implement new enhancements to further strengthen the program, including a new Product Safety Code, and expanded focus on energy efficiency, materials reuse, and recycling.

Responsible Care companies reduced hazardous releases to the air, land, and water by 76 percent from 1988 to 2011, and have reduced recordable injury and illness rates by 79 percent since 1990. In fact, Responsible Care companies have a worker safety record that is five times safer than the U.S. manufacturing sector as a whole, and two times better than the business of chemistry overall. Through Responsible Care, the chemistry industry will continue to strive for innovative ways to do more over the next quarter-century.
