Flooring manufacturer Shaw Industries Inc. announced an investment of $184 million to expand and upgrade its fiber manufacturing facility in Andalusia, AL on Tuesday, according to a Alabama Department of Commerce press release.

“These investments will ensure the long-term viability of this critical operation within Shaw’s portfolio of manufacturing facilities. They are designed to improve the plant’s ability to compete successfully in the marketplace for the short and long term,” said the firm’s chairman and chief executive officer Vance Bell in a statement.

Shaw’s equipment upgrades will focus on increasing efficiency, production capacity, ergonomics, and safety, the release outlined. Improvements to chillers and other new equipment will make the plant more energy efficient.

“The facility upgrade will utilize state-of-the-art technology and innovative processes that will be industry-leading in cost and quality,” said Bell.

Plans call for equipment to be in place and operational by mid-2018. More than 1000 workers are currently employed at the Andalusia plant.
