Swiss food and beverage giant Nestle announced plans Tuesday to transition its product packaging to 100% recyclable or reusable packaging within the next six years.
The company said the effort stems from “an urgent need to minimize the impact of packaging on the environment,” and that Nestlé’s vision is that none of its packaging ends up in landfills.
“Plastic waste is one of the biggest sustainability issues the world is facing today. Tacking it requires a creative approach. We are committed to finding improved solutions to reduce, re-use, and recycle,” the firm’s chief executive officer, Mark Schneider, said in a statement.
Nestle will focus on three main areas as part of the reduction, including the elimination of non-recyclable plastics, fostering use of plastics with shorter recycling rates, and removing or altering packaging that requires multiple materials.
The company said it works with value chain partners and industry associations to examine different options for reducing its use of plastics in packaging and ways of reducing plastic-related waste.
A study released in July 2017 found that of the 6200 million MT of plastic waste generated globally from 1950 to 2015 only a mere 9% was recycled, 79% ended up in landfills, and 12% was incinerated.
