German specialty chemicals producer LANXESS recently commissioned a new thermoplastic specialty compound production line at its plant in Krefeld-Uerdingen, Germany, expanding the site’s capacity of high-performance compounds by 10,000 MT/yr., the company announced in a press release Thursday.
Dedicating €7 million, or about $8.6 million, to the expansion effort, LANXESS said the new production line will fit into existing lines for Durethan polyamide compounds and PBT compounds. Company officials said growth in new forms of mobility, like electromobility, and increased demand from the electrical and electronics industries were drivers behind the investment.
LANXESS installed a high-performance twin-screw extruder and equipment for raw material feeding, dosing, cooling, and classifying.
“The extruder provides all the equipment necessary for the economical production of high-quality compounds,” Dr.Stefanie Nickel, head of compounding in LANXESS’ High Performance Materials business, said in a statement. “The line is very well suited, for example, for our glass fiber-reinforced polyamides, which are used in the structural lightweight design of automobiles.”
Compounds with high mineral contents and flame-retardant compounds can also be produced on the new line.
The company is one of the biggest manufacturers of polyamide 6 base resins.
