Canadian packaging and tissue paper manufacturing firm Cascades Inc. said it plans to close its Maspeth, NY packaging plant by Dec. 31, 2018, cutting some 148 positions there, the Kingsey Falls, QC-based company announced Wednesday.
“Modernization and optimization efforts” in the northeastern region of the U.S. were the primary drivers behind the move, Cascades said in a press release.
“To support our future development and better serve our customers, we are announcing today that the Maspeth plant’s output will gradually be redeployed to our other facilities. This decision was necessary as the current site has reached its physical limits,” Charles Malo, president and chief operating officer of Cascades, said in a statement. “The transition will be seamless for our customers. The property has already been put up for sale for US$72 million.”
Cascades said it will work to help local employee impacted by the closure, including assistance with searching for new employment.
