Sturtevant Reaches Air Classifier Milestone

July 28, 2014

Sturtevant Inc., one of the world’s largest suppliers of air classifiers and related equipment, recently sold its 5000th air classifier.

The company sold its first air classifier to Reynolds Tobacco Co. of Winston-Salem, NC and shipped it on Sept. 18, 1919. This early design still has features recognizable today in Sturtevant’s Whirlwind air classifier, including an internal fan.

“Significant changes have taken place between the shipment of serial number one and number five-thousand,” said Sam Rajkovich, director of sales and marketing. “Number one was capable of cut sizes in the range of 100 to 325 mesh. Number One was innovative for its time – the first internal fan classifier with sharp cut point classification and recirculation. The early predecessor of the Whirlwind classifier we offer today.”

Number 5000, a SuperFine air classifier is a leap in technology. With cut points as low as 3 micron it is a cutting edge, ultra-high efficiency classifier.

Sturtevant supplied its 5000 air classifier to Imerys, a world leader in mineral-based specialty solutions.

“Sturtevant and Imerys have been partnering for many years so it is fitting that they helped us reach this amazing milestone,” said Rajkovich. “On behalf of the employees and the Sturtevant family, we are all very excited to reach this goal and we are proud that machines in over 150 countries bear the Sturtevant name.”
