The requirement to reliably detect dust levels in processes is increasing. Although modern filter installations are quite efficient, there is no guarantee that there will not be any filter breakdowns or leaks, from time to time. Those situations cannot be eliminated, but they can be quickly detected. This detection can be achieved using the new “Dusty” dust level detection instrument. “Dusty” uses the proven triboelectrical principal. The triboelectrical principal is where particles, moving in a duct or pipe, accumulate kinetic energy. However when those particles collide with the detection probe, the kinetic energy is converted into static energy. It is this static energy that creates a coulomb charge. This charge is electronically processed and the resultant signal is used to trigger alarm points and, in some instances, be used as a 4-20 mA process output. When “Dusty” leaves the SWR factory, the alarm point is set at approximately 25 mg/cu m, using a standard organic material. The velocity of this test material is approximately 7 m/s.
