Troubleshooting Pneumatic Conveying Systems

When: May 8, 2018. Time: 12am PDT | 3pm EDT

On May 8, 2018 at 3pm Eastern/12pm Pacific, Professor Mark Jones is Head of the School of Engineering, Director of TUNRA Bulk Solids Handling Research Associates, will present "Troubleshooting Pneumatic Conveying Systems," as part of Powder & Bulk Solids' DryPro free webinar series.

Pneumatic conveying systems are widely used in the process industries but often suffer from a range of operating problems, such as pipeline blockage, systems not achieving rate, erosive wear, and issues with product quality. This session will outline why these problems occur and identify potential solutions illustrated through a range of practical industrial case studies.

The learning outcomes will be:

* Understand why a range of operating problems occur
* Identify solutions to overcome these problems
* Understand the context of these solutions through industrial case studies

Professor Jones has held the Chair in Bulk Solids Handling at the University of Newcastle since 1999. His research interests span the broad area of Bulk Materials Handling and he specializes in pipeline transport.

This webinar will include a 45-minute presentation, followed by a 15-minute Q&A.

Pneumatic Conveyors: Achieving Reliable and Energy Efficient Operation

When: September 13, 2017. Time: 11am PDT | 2pm EDT

This presentation will outline key choices to be made when procuring or designing a pneumatic conveying system, including the choice of the most appropriate operating conditions and key components, and sizing to create a system that will operate with minimum downtime and energy consumption. The understanding imparted will be of equal interest to those responsible for maintaining, trouble-shooting, or improving existing systems.

Points of interest include:
• Basic function and modes of flow (dilute and dense phase)
• Rotary valves for pneumatic conveying (a short review of specification options and other feeders, especially blow tanks)
• Vacuum versus positive pressure conveying
• Filter types and sizing
• Air movers (short review of types and their application areas)
• Energy efficiency (how to choose the best system; advantage of stepped bores)
• Interfacing hoppers, silos, bins, and feeders to pneumatic conveyors

This hour-long webinar will be presented by Professor Mike Bradley, Professor in Particle and Bulk Technology, Director of the Wolfson Centre for Bulk Solids Handling Technology, University of Greenwich, and moderated by Powder & Bulk Solids editor-in-chief, Kevin Cronin.

Performance Characteristics and Selection Criteria for Conveyors

When: July 12, 2017. Time: 12pm PDT | 3pm EDT

This webinar will identify key selection and performance criteria when specifying mechanical handling equipment (e.g belt conveyors, screw conveyors, bucket elevators, etc). The focus will be on the critical issues that influence selection of conveyor type and how the material properties of the bulk solid influence design. Case studies will be used to illustrate the issues.

Points of interest include:
• Conveyor selection criteria
• Influence of the bulk material on conveyor selection
• Examples to illustrate sound selection approaches

This hour-long webinar will be presented by Mark Jones, Head, School of Engineering; Director, TUNRA Bulk Solids, and moderated by Powder & Bulk Solids editor-in-chief, Kevin Cronin.

Combustible Dust Testing Strategies for Different Types of Dust
When: May 10, 2017. Time: 11am PDT | 2pm EDT

Commercial laboratories offer a confusing array of test options for characterizing combustible dust hazards. This webinar provides a clear overview of available test methods and how the test data are used as part of a dust hazard assessment. A practical approach towards developing a sampling and test strategy is offered, which includes tips on how to deal with specific classes of dust such as “marginally explosible”, “hard-to-ignite”, those with very low minimum ignition energies, and metallic vs. non-metallic materials.

This hour-long webinar will be presented by Martin Clouthier, Director, Jensen Hughes, and moderated by Powder & Bulk Solids editor-in-chief, Kevin Cronin.

How to Effectively Select Dilute vs. Dense Phase Conveying
When: March 8, 2017 Time: 11am PST | 2pm EST

This one-hour webinar will discuss the key factors involved in making a decision for either dilute or dense phase conveying mode with a pneumatic conveying system. Instead of treating this process as a “black art” or by using solely “experience”, an engineering approach is reviewed to highlight a proven method for selection based on the material’s characteristics. Risks, pros/cons, and general insight to relative capital and operating costs will be presented.

This hour-long webinar will be presented by Eric Maynard Senior Consultant/Director, Jenike & Johanson, and moderated by Powder & Bulk Solids editor-in-chief, Kevin Cronin.
